Company Profile: Network Warrington operates the municipal bus passenger transport network in and around Warrington, Cheshire, carrying 8 million passengers a year on its fleet of 125 vehicles, with over 275 employees. The company won Bus Operator of the Year 2008, and as a leading transport operator, IT is central to the business's development and operational plans.
The customer requirement -
Network Warrington needed a partner who could help them develop their IT systems to support the changing needs of the bus industry for the next 10 years. Planned projects which would deliver new services to Network Warrington's customers, and new efficiencies to the business would result in "server sprawl" and increased costs as the IT infrastructure grew, unless a future-proof solution could be found.
Services and Results -
Lucid Networks have designed, installed and manage a virtualised server infrastructure, which allows the company to quickly and securely roll out new applications to support operations. All core network services, including front-line operational systems such as ticketing and depot operations are hosted on virtual servers, improving resilience, delivering best use of hardware resources, and reducing cost.
Without virtualisation, the Network Warrington datacentre would require 9 servers. Now it has just 3, while still delivering higher levels of resilience than before. We estimate the saving on CAPEX is at £10k over 18 months, with further incremental savings of up to £300 / month on power, cooling and other running costs each month.
We deliver core business applications from both Network Warrington's own datacentre in Warrington and our own offsite datacentre, providing staff, management and partner organisations with secure access to critical information when and where they need it. A Lucid Networks managed VPN links the main offices and datacentre with a site office at the central bus terminal in the centre of town, with a Voice Over IP link providing free site-to-site calls and call transfers.
